SAN FRANCISCO — A police officer and a suspect were wounded Sunday night after the two exchanged gunfire following a car chase, authorities said.

The shooting happened after police were notified about 10:30 p.m. about a vehicle suspected in a robbery entering San Francisco from the Bay Bridge.
In a statement, police said officers found that vehicle traveling on 5th Street near Folsom Street and tried to stop it at Mission and First streets. Police said officers pursued the vehicle through city streets until it became disabled in the area of Bayshore Boulevard and Jerrold Avenue.
Police said that as officers encountered the vehicle, the driver shot at them and wounded one multiple times. At least one officer shot back and hit that person, police said.

The officer is expected to survive what were critical injuries that threatened the officer’s life, according to a statment from the San Francisco Police Officers Association. Police said the suspect’s injuries also are life-threatening.
Officers arrested a passenger who ran from the vehicle after finding him in the area of Bayshore Boulevard and Costa Street, police said.
