Former Cal safety Ashytn Davis signed a one-year deal with the 49ers, who released running back Jermar Jefferson in a corresponding move.

Davis, a Santa Cruz native, was a 2020 third-round pick of the Jets and started 22 of 69 games played in his first five seasons there. A 12-game starter last season with the Miami Dolphins, Davis will compete with incumbent safeties Ji’Ayir Brown, Malik Mustapha and Marques Sigle.
The Santa Cruz High School product joined Cal in 2015 and played in 48 of a possible 50 games for the Bears, including 33 starts, over his four seasons. He was an All-Pac-12 first-team performer as a junior in 2018, and was named to the conference’s second team in 2019.

Davis, now 29, had 171 tackles, seven interceptions — including a touchdown return in 2018 against Colorado — three forced fumbles and three fumbles recovered as a Bear. He also returned kickoffs, scoring on an 89-yarder as a senior against Idaho State.
Jefferson had just signed with the 49ers last week as a free agent. He has played 11 games over his five-year career after starring at Oregon State collegiately.
