CASTRO VALLEY — A 20-year-old man will not be prosecuted and has been released from custody after he was arrested on suspicion of murder for fatally stabbing his father, who was physically assaulting his mother, authorities said.
The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office said after reviewing the case that it could not be proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the son was not acting in self-defense or the defense of another person.
The stabbing happened about 1:30 p.m. Sept. 5 at the family home on Parsons Avenue.
According to authorities Eugene Powell, 51, was physically assaulting, his wife, choking her as she screamed for help and begged him to stop.

Their son heard his mother from another part of the home. He grabbed a knife from the kitchen and came to her aid, stabbing his father as the attack continued, authorities said.
The mother then called 911 and both remained at the scene until Alameda County Sheriff’s deputies and medical personnel arrived. Eugene Powell was taken to a hospital where he later died.
The son and his mother both gave statements to investigators.
The son was arrested at the home and taken to Santa Rita Jail pending a review of the case by the district attorney’s office. He was released from custody Sept. 10.
