For ages, “Marvel Snap” fans have been asking for a Draft Mode. The popular mode gives players card choices and they build their own deck to take into competition. Because there’s so much randomness, it creates unpredictable scenarios, so that players won’t know what an opponent has.

The problem in building this mode for “Marvel Snap” is that decks are only 12 cards, so there are fewer ways to introduce meaningful randomness with decks needing high synergy. Second Dinner has worked on this problem for 18 months, and the result is a limited-time game mode that blends on-the-fly deck creation with roguelike elements, said Sam Stoddard, principal game designer.
HOW TO PLAY
In Draft Mode, players use one ticket and must win five times to complete a run. They are allowed two losses before the run ends, with respawn tokens available in the rewards track. Finishing a run gives players a Premium Mystery Variant, but that’s available once a day. Winning also gives players Bits, which they can use to purchase items in the limited-time game shop. That’s similar to other modes.
So how does the “Marel Snap” Draft Mode work? Players are given choices to fill out a 10-card deck. The choices come first in a three-card pack that is themed around a specific archetype such as destroy, move or ramp. There are 70 to 80 starter combinations such as a Thanos-themed one or a Swarm-archetype offering, but one archetype that is under-represented is Discard, Stoddard said. These cards and subsequent ones also have rarity levels from rare all the way up to legendary.
Second Dinner said once players choose a starter, the Draft Mode steers the choices to complementary cards, and they’re marked with archetypes. What’s more, some of the cards could have bonuses such as extra power. Other cards could have additional abilities called Augments. These extra powers include Regeneration, which acts like base Wolverine or Overload, which gives players +1 energy for winning a location. Superstar guarantees a card is drawn in the opening hand.

REWARDS AND POTENTIAL
After each win, Draft Mode gives players a bonus that improves their deck. It starts off by letting players Augment a card, and after more wins, they can add more cards to their deck until they hit the 12-card limit.
One of the best elements about a Draft Mode is that players can break the game or toss opponents an unexpected curveball. Players could have multiple copies of a card in their deck. They could also add an augment that shores up a weakness in a card. For example, an Iron Man could get +5 energy and a silence ability so that it can’t be targeted by Red Guardian, Cosmic Ghost Rider or Enchantress, but it could still be destroyed by Negasonic Teenage Warhead.
Other cards could be so powerful that they’re broken during a run. They can get a Galactus and augment it with ridiculous power or make it usable before Turn 6. Anything is possible, and fans should expect some viral moments in this mode.
The “Marvel Snap” Draft Mode is available at noon PDT Aug. 24 and will be available until Sept. 7.
