EL CERRITO — A 38-year-old San Pablo woman was arrested on suspicion of violently assaulting and robbing another woman Wednesday afternoon in El Cerrito, police said.

The victim — identified as a 59-year-old woman — was walking southbound on the Ohlone Greenway, near Wall Avenue, around 1:30 p.m. when the incident happened, according to the El Cerrito Police Department.
Police said the suspect hit the victim on the back of the head and on the side of the face with a “large metal wrench.” The victim suffered deep cranial and facial cuts and lost teeth in the attack.
The suspect then grabbed the victim’s purse, according to police.
The victim made her way to a restaurant and signaled for help, police said, adding that a witness contacted police and watched the suspect hide in some nearby bushes.
Officers with the Richmond Police Department, who initially believed the incident happened in their city, arrived at the scene and spoke with the victim. She pointed out the suspect’s location.

The suspect ran from officers but was arrested after a brief pursuit, according to police.
The victim was taken to an area trauma center to be treated for her injuries, police said.
