PITTSBURG — A suspicious death investigated has ended with the determination that a man died in his home of natural causes, despite early indications there could have been more to the story.

The June 9 death of a 65-year-old Pittsburg man was investigated after a friend of his — a 53-year-old woman — reportedly waited hours to call 911, then told a dispatcher that he was in distress and barely breathing. That last claim seemed very hard for police to believe, as rigor mortis had set in when paramedics got there, indicating he’d been dead for hours, authorities said.
The man died at his apartment on Crestview Lane in Pittsburg, authorities said.
When police pressed the woman about the delay, she was incredulous, demanding to know why they were investigating and adding that, “people die all the time,” according to investigative records on the death. Ultimately, though, authorities determined the man died of natural causes and had several medical maladies, a Pittsburg police spokesman said.

The woman was not arrested in connection with the investigation, but she had been arrested last March on suspicion of child abuse, for allegedly smashing a child with a bottle, according to an arrest report. She appeared to be intoxicated when police arrived at the apartment, and later admitted to waiting four hours to call 911, but couldn’t explain why, authorities said.
