During her decade-long friendship with Blake Lively, Taylor Swift happily accepted the honor of being godmother to the “Gossip Girl” actor’s three daughters and even honored them in her songs.

But in the fallout of Lively’s contentious legal battle with Justin Baldoni, there has been some notable collateral damage. According to the Daily Mail, this includes her once-close relationship with Swift, along with the pop mega-star’s godmother relationship to her daughters James, 11, Inez, 9, and Betty, 6.
The repercussions of Lively’s failed effort to portray herself as a #MeToo heroine in her multimillion-dollar lawsuit against Baldoni has left Swift feeling as though she’s had “no choice” but to remove herself from the godmother position — after her friendship with their mother has been damaged beyond repair, insiders told the Daily Mail.
“It was one of the toughest decisions she’s ever had to make,” a source close to Swift told the Daily Mail. “It was very emotional because she loves the girls. It hurt her heart, but she had no choice given the circumstances.”
“There was never an agreement in writing about her being the girls’ godmother,” the source added. “It was a verbal one between Taylor and Blake.”
Lively took Baldoni, her director and co-star for the 2024 film, “It Ends with Us,” to court in late 2024, alleging that he sexually harassed her during the production and helped to coordinate an online P.R. campaign against her for speaking out against the alleged misbehavior. Baldoni denied ever harassing Lively or retaliating against her. He accused her of falsely portraying him as a sexual predator and of working with Reynolds, her powerful movie star/producer husband, to wrest control of the film from him.
A federal judge in April dismissed Lively’s sexual harassment claims against Baldoni, and the two ended up reaching a settlement on her retaliation claims.
During the bruising back-and-forth court filings, Swift was among the A-list stars whose names got dragged into the case. To critics, the singer came across as a “mean girl” in private texts and emails that were made public. In the documents, Lively referred to herself as the queen, or “Khaleesi” Daenerys Targaryen from “Game of Thrones,” and Swift and Reynolds as her “dragons.” The documents also described Swift as appearing to go along with Lively’s efforts to take control of the film’s screenplay from Baldoni.
Up until the court battle, Swift’s closeness with Lively was often expressed in her embrace of her friend’s family, according to the Daily Mail. She regularly hosted Lively, Reynolds and their children at her $17 million Rhode Island mansion, name-checked the girls in her music, and even used James’ baby voice at the beginning of her song “Gorgeous.”

Swift first confirmed her godmother title in July 2024 in an Instagram post, promoting Reynolds and the release of his movie, “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
“Shout out to Wade Wilson, aka my godkids’ sperm donor!” Swift jokingly wrote in a caption that referred to the real name of Reynolds’ Deadpool character.
Reynolds basked in the attention, telling Deadline that he would love to have Swift’s post on his “gravestone.” He then confirmed, “She is the godparent to my daughters. That was very sweet. Not just sweet, that was, like, you could probably quantify a box office based on Taylor just doing something like that.”
During a performance of her Eras Tour in Madrid in May 2024, Swift also gave Lively’s daughters a shout-out as they sat in the audience with their mother, the Daily Mail reported.
“I have to say that on ‘Folklore,’ some of my favorite characters are named James, Inez and Betty,” Swift said to the crowd.
The trio of sisters were seen jumping up and down in their VIP seats, the Daily Mail reported. But it’s likely that the girls will no longer enjoy “such perks,” as the Daily Mail reported.
“Taylor’s having the time of her life now that she is married, her family is great, her career is great and she’s looking forward to the future,” a second source told the Daily Mail. “The only thing that is causing troubles in her life is Blake’s kids and not having the relationship she would like to have with them as their godmother.”
“Right now, she doesn’t feel it’s healthy or realistic to maintain a close relationship with the children while having virtually no relationship with their parents,” the source continued. “She believes stepping away is the most respectful path forward for all parties.”
