Nicki Minaj ‘in talks’ to record a duet with Trump’s daughter-in-law: report

Nicki Minaj’s embrace of Donald Trump and his MAGA politics may extend to the “Queen of Rap” doing a big, big favor for the president’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, an aspiring pop singer.

Minaj, one of the most influential rappers of all time, and one of the world’s best-selling music artists, is “in talks” to record a duet with the 43-year-old Lara Trump, who has been trying to get an “unlikely” singing career going for the past few years, entertainment writer Rob Shuter reported on his Naughty But Nice Substack.

Multiple music industry insiders told Shuter the conversations have been going on for weeks, although nothing has been signed.

“Lara is definitely driving this,” a well-placed music source told Shuter. “She made the first move, they’ve been talking, and Nicki hasn’t shut the door. This is much more than a passing idea.”

It’s not known what kind of duet the women could record together. But Lara Trump has shown a certain versatility in her musical performances, releasing country, pop and dance tracks online. Unfortunately for the one-time TV producer and former Republican National Committee co-chair, her performances have frequently been ridiculed, with her singing called a “Geneva Convention Violation.”

In 2023, Lara Trump recorded a widely mocked cover of Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down,” the Daily Beast reported. More recently, the wife of Eric Trump went viral — for the wrong reasons — when she teamed up with Egyptian rapper Mohamed Ramadan to record a video for a dance-track collaboration, “Sah-Sah.”

They recorded the video at the Trump National Golf Club in Jupiter, Florida, last September, but a clip from the video gained traction on social media when it was released in January, the Daily Beast said. People had lots to say about Lara Trump’s dance moves as she traded verses with Ramadan, who commands more than 31 million Instagram followers. The Daily Beast said the mother of two “murders the dance floor in a cringe video” as she performed alongside the rapper.

So, Minaj might have to do some heavy lifting to make Lara Trump look like she credibly belongs in her musical company. But Minaj may be up to the task and her collaboration with the president’s daughter-in-law may not seem so far-fetched, as Shuter said.

In January, Minaj declared herself “the President’s No. 1 fan” when she visited the White House to support the launch of Trump Accounts, a proposed savings initiative for children. As Time magazine reported, Minaj support for Trump appears to have been a long time coming with her interest in conservative politics going back to at least the 2012 presidential election, when she referred to herself “as a Republican voting for Mitt Romney” in a guest verse for Lil Wayne’s track “Mercy.”

Minaj told Time she became disenchanted with Barack Obama and frustrated by the expectation that Black entertainers would reflexively vote Democratic. Her disillusionment was in part the product of Obama’s friendship with Jay-Z, Time reported. “Lots of rappers don’t like Jay-Z,” Minaj said about the entertainment mogul who has accumulated a lot of power in the industry.

Minaj also gained support in MAGA circles in 2021 after she faced online backlash for voicing skepticism about COVID-19 vaccines. But even as she drifted towards Trump’s politics, she initially opted to stay quiet for fear of alienating fans. “It’s been ingrained in everyone’s brain in the music business that we are supposed to be a Democratic family,” she said. “I just knew they would not like me supporting Trump.”

While Minaj is now open about her support for Trump, it remains to be seen whether that extends to putting her artistry on the line to nurture the musical aspirations of one of his family members. Nothing about a duet with Lara Trump has been officially announced and no recording date has been set, Shuter said. But sources insisted to Shuter the talks are “genuine.”

“Ideas have been exchanged, and everyone involved knows it would create an enormous amount of buzz,” a source told Shuter. “Whether people stream it because they love it or because they can’t believe it exists is beside the point.”
