Silver Creek grocery store in South San Jose to close

SAN JOSE — Silver Creek Community Market in South San Jose will close on Sept. 20, affecting dozens of workers, a filing with the state Employment Development Department shows.

The organic grocery store at 5667 Silver Creek Valley Road is owned and operated by New Leaf Community Markets. An estimated 61 jobs are expected to be impacted.

“This action is expected to be permanent, resulting in the closure of the entire Silver Creek grocery store,” Laura Ramsey, director of human resources with New Leaf Community Markets, wrote in the WARN notice to the EDD.

The company’s lease of the 25,000-square-foot space is scheduled to expire in October, according to commercial real estate firm

The store is the anchor retailer of Canyon Creek Plaza, which totals 64,700 square feet.

“I’m sorry to hear they are closing,” said Eva Mei, a San Jose resident who lives nearby, and was shopping at the market for the first time. “I like the store. It’s very nice.”

San Diego-based Retail Opportunity Investments paid $27.9 million for Canyon Creek Plaza in 2021. Blackstone Real Estate Partners X, a fund controlled by investment firm Blackstone, paid $4 billion for Retail Opportunity Investments in 2025. The deal included all of the firm’s properties.

David Taxin, a partner with commercial real estate firm Meacham Oppenheimer, said grocery stores have struggled to stay in business at the shopping center.

“No grocery store has been able to make it at that location,” Taxin said. “Cosentino’s used to operate there, and then New Seasons Market had a store there. Maybe that’s not the right location for a supermarket. There are just not enough people to really make a run there for a grocery store.”

The median household income for those who live within 1 mile of the center is about $230,900, according to The Econic Co. A figure that is roughly 58% higher than the median household income of $146,400 in San Jose as of 2024.

Creek Eatery, Con Azucar Cafe, Mexico Lindo, Orange Theory Fitness, Intero Residential, Ging Ga Sushi and Comerica Bank are among the other tenants at Canyon Creek Plaza.

It’s possible some of the Silver Creek Community Market workers who are losing their jobs may be able to find work elsewhere with New Leaf, the grocery chain suggested in its WARN notice.

“Their separation from employment will be permanent unless they receive and accept an offer of transfer to an open position for which they are qualified for at another New Leaf grocery store,” New Leaf Community Markets stated in the filing.

New Leaf Community Markets did not immediately respond when asked for a comment about the shutdown.
