Brentwood picks O’Grodnick as city’s next police chief

BRENTWOOD — Walter O’Grodnick will take over as Brentwood’s next police chief after 10 months of holding the position on an interim basis following the retirement of former Chief Tim Herbert.

With more than 32 years of law enforcement experience, O’Grodnick will officially become the city’s 13th police chief on July 16, the city said in a statement.

The veteran officer was selected based on input from residents, business owners, employees, and community stakeholders, gathered through a survey with more than 240 responses, said acting City Manager Terrance Davis.

“The priorities identified by our community closely aligned with the leadership qualities of Chief O’Grodnick,” Davis said in a statement Monday.

O’Grodnick has served Brentwood since 1998, after starting his law enforcement career in Galt.

During his time with the city, O’Grodnick demonstrated the “leadership, humility, character, and vision” to lead the Brentwood Police Department into its next chapter, Davis said.

“We’re thrilled to have someone of Chief O’Grodnick’s integrity and caliber in this critical role,” Davis said.

O’Grodnick said he will continue to serve and work collaboratively with fellow officers, community members and city leaders.

“I truly appreciate the outpouring of support,” O’Grodnick told this news organization. “I remain fully committed to serving the needs of my entire staff, working closely with our Executive Team in responding to the needs of our community, effectively and efficiently, paired with the highest level of professionalism.”

O’Grodnick is a graduate of the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute and the Contra Costa Local Government Leadership Academy. He holds an associate degree in public safety services and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice management.

On Aug. 22, the Brentwood Police Department will host an open house from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for residents to engage with the new chief.
