According to San Jose police, officers were called about 1:40 p.m. Tuesday to a report of an unresponsive child at a motel in the 2500 block of Fontaine Road, a street that runs parallel to Highway 101 near Tully and Alvin roads.
Medics who responded attempted to revive the child, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The child’s identity and cause of death have not been released by the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner, though a law-enforcement source told this news organization that the child was around 5 years old.

Because the death involved a child without an immediate or apparent explanation, police invoked the county’s child-death protocol that summons government entities, including the District Attorney’s Office.
The protocol does not necessitate suspicious circumstances, and the source told this news organization that there were no immediate indications of foul play. When reached for comment, San Jose police said in a statement that “investigations into child deaths are highly detailed processes that require extensive evidence collection and thorough follow-up to determine the cause and manner of death. This is an active and ongoing investigation.”
