ANTIOCH — A swimmer missing since last week after entering the San Joaquin River from behind a restaurant in the Antioch Marina has been found dead, authorities said.
Friends had been holding out hope that 46-year-old Edgielyn Torrente, 46, might be found alive. She went missing on Sept. 23 about 6:10 p.m., when she and another woman went into the water behind Smith’s Landing Seafood Grill at 1 Marina Drive. A police officer used a jet ski to rescue the other woman.
In a statement, Antioch police said the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol found Torrente west of Smith’s Landing on Sunday and that they needed time to notify the family before notifying the public. Torrente was found about a mile west from where she’d been swimming.
“She was good people,” Tina Loyolacabral said of the friend that she’d known for 10 years. “She always was kind.”

The Contra Costa County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office will make the final determination on Torrente’s cause of death. Police said no foul play is suspected.
“River currents are strong and unpredictable, even close to a shore,” police said in their statement. “Wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket when swimming or boating. If someone is in trouble in the water, call 911 and throw them something that floats. Do not go in after them.”
