SAN FRANCISCO — BART’s recent struggles with track availability continued Thursday, when they lost their Red Line and Green Line service to mitigate traffic following a fire on one of the tracks in the downtown area.

Agency spokesperson MIchelle Robertson said the fire was caused by trash and debris near the 24th Street/Mission station. Fire crews put out the blaze within minutes.
All 50 stations remained open, but BART closed the two lines to mitigate traffic through the area while workers did safety inspections in the aftermath of the fire. The closures caused major delays near San Francisco and reverberated through the system.
BART said it began to restore full service to its system at about 1:20 p.m. but that residual delays were expected to continue.

The Red Line serves riders from Richmond to Millbrae, and the Green Line serves riders from Berryessa/San Jose to Daly City. Both lines run into the Yellow Line, which runs from the San Francisco Airport to Antioch, and the the Orange Line, which runs from Berryessa/San Jose to Richmond.
BART riders dealth with three straight days of interrupted service a week ago, culminating with major delays on Sept. 10 because of an equipment issue that interrupted train control.
On Sept. 9, track equipment problems forced BART to close portions of the Green Line and Blue Line, the latter of which disrputed service between Dublin-Pleasanton and Daly City. A day earlier, BART lost Green Line service after a fire at a substation near the Daly City station.
