“The U.S. was built for driving,” writes the site’s Cris Tolomia. “Long before interstates connected every coast, wagon trails, railroad grades and hand-built mountain roads gave Americans a way to see a country too vast to take in from one place. That instinct never faded.”
The first pick on Quartz’s list should be familiar to any Californian. It’s the famous highway threading Big Sur along the Pacific coastline – which should always be checked for mudslides and closures before undertaking.
