SAN RAMON — If a local comic had taken the stage at Tommy T’s in a shirt with long sleeves instead of short ones, it might have saved him a trip to county jail.
The 33-year-old Walnut Creek man was arrested on suspicion of grand theft this month after police matched tattoos seen from a video of his standup comedy performance to surveillance footage of a man stealing a cash register from a San Ramon Starbucks, authorities said.
San Ramon police say that on Aug. 10, the man went into a Safeway on San Ramon Valley Boulevard and ran off with an entire cash register, stealing less than $200 in cash but removing the $1,000 register in the process. In a coincidental twist, he was first recognized by a Union City detective, who saw a flyer about the crime and said the suspect looked like an old colleague of his, from before he worked in law enforcement, authorities said.

Police found videos on social media of the 33-year-old’s comedy performance at Tommy T’s, a standup club in Pleasanton. They say both videos show a “distinct rectangular shaped tattoo” on the same arm.
Officers came to the man’s Walnut Creek apartment and booked him on a grand theft warrant. He was subsequently released, and thus far no charges have been filed, court records show.
