SAN JOSE — A Sprouts Farmers Market has been proposed for a site in South San Jose where an Orchard Supply Hardware store once operated for about 36 years, according to city planning files.

Totaling 25,100 square feet, the Sprouts supermarket at 5651 Cottle Road would use the same main entrance as the old hardware store that closed in 2018. Lowe’s Hardware, which acquired Orchard Supply Hardware in 2013, permanently closed all locations in 2019.
Dollinger Properties bought the Cottle Road property for $7.3 million through an auction in July 2025, Santa Clara County public documents show.
The former 44,600-square-foot Orchard Supply Hardware building is on a 4.3-acre site that includes a large surface parking lot, according to commercial real estate listing sites.

It would be divided into several spaces that would include Sprouts, a Goodard School daycare and preschool operation, and two smaller retail spaces, city planning files show. The daycare and preschool would occupy about 9,800 square feet.
Two vacant tenant spaces that each total 3,200 square feet have yet to be leased, according to an Aug. 12 San Jose Planning Department document.
Depending on specific store requirements and configurations, Sprouts could potentially employ 90 to 125 workers at the location.
