RICHMOND — Gunfire erupted Tuesday night on an East Bay freeway, sending a driver to an area hospital, authorities said.

The incident happened around 9:15 p.m. on westbound Interstate 80, near Barrett Avenue, in Richmond, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Authorities said an investigation revealed the driver was traveling directly behind a black sedan when it suddenly braked. The driver moved into the Barrett Avenue exit lane and heard roughly three gunshots as the two vehicles traveled alongside one another.
The driver immediately exited the freeway at Barrett Avenue and called 911, according to the CHP.

Authorities said the driver was taken to an area hospital with a gunshot wound to the left shoulder. The injury was not believed to be life-threatening.
The CHP’s Golden Gate Division Major Crimes Unit is investigating the shooting.
Officers closed westbound I-80 between Solano and Barrett avenues to search the roadway for evidence, according to the CHP. The freeway reopened just before 11 p.m.
