Nearly three-dozen firefighters battled a blaze Wednesday afternoon that tore through a building in downtown Oakland.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries during the fire, which burned a multi-story building on Webster Street between 6th and 7th streets, according to Michael Hunt, an Oakland Fire Department spokesman.
Crews were initially called to the blaze at 1:08 p.m.; they requested an extra fire truck and an extra engine to battle the flames as it threatened a nearby residential building and an adjoining residential-commercial structure, Hunt said. The fire was brought under control at 2:05 p.m.
Video captured on scene by fire crews depicted flames shooting out of two second-story windows while firefighters worked to access the building’s roof. A plume of black and grey smoke could be seen rising above downtown Oakland throughout the ordeal.

It was not immediately clear whether anyone lived in the building. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, he said.
