San Francisco is finalizing a deal to sign Darren Baker, the son of future Hall of Fame manager Dusty Baker, according to a report from NBC Sports Bay Area. He is expected to join Triple-A Sacramento.
Baker joins Peyton Bonds, the nephew of Barry Bonds, and Kaeden Kent, the son of Jeff Kent, as players in the Giants’ system with notable family ties.
In Game 5 of the 2002 World Series, a three-year-old Baker memorably ran onto the field to retrieve Kenny Lofton’s bat before being scooped up by J.T. Snow. Following the incident, Major League Baseball introduced a new protocol, colloquially called the “Darren Baker Rule,” stating that batboys had to be at least 14.

Baker, now 27, was drafted in the 10th round of the 2021 MLB draft out of Cal by the Washington Nationals and made his debut in 2024, appearing in nine games and going 7-for-14 at the plate. The infielder hasn’t appeared in the majors since getting his cup of coffee and only appeared in 13 games in the White Sox’s system this year due to an unspecified injury
Given the Giants’ current infield situation, Baker could potentially make an appearance for the major-league team before the season is over.
