Lutticken’s Deli and After 5 Restaurant, a sandwich shop and restaurant that has operated in unincorporated West Menlo Park since 1981, is set to close at the end of September.

“Everything’s going to be shut down September 30,” said manager Judy Congdon, who’s worked there since it opened. “It’s very sad.”
The closure will also include the eatery’s two dining outposts at Stanford University and one on Sand Hill Road, according to Congdon.
The cozy eatery on Alameda de las Pulgas in West Menlo Park serves locals throughout the day, operating as a coffee shop, as a sandwich and Mexican food restaurant during the day, and, in its After 5 iteration, as a beer and wine bar, too. It also hosts regular live music events and a weekly karaoke night with a loyal following.
Grilled sandwiches — like the Hawaiian, featuring ham, Swiss cheese, and pineapple salsa; or a pork torta with peppers, crema and jack cheese (both $12.95), are on offer alongside a lengthy menu of custom sandwich and sub options, while a burrito selection (with all items under $11) rounds out the menu.

In 2024, it was awarded the California Senate District 13’s Small Business of the Year by State Sen. Josh Becker, and over the years, has been involved in the community as a Little League team sponsor. But business hasn’t bounced back since the pandemic, and staying open has been a struggle, according to Congdon.
“We’re just not making the money we used to make,” she said. “If it was sustainable, we would stay open. But it’s not.”
