A tourist died in Death Valley after attempting to walk for help after his car became stuck in a remote area, officials at the national park said.

Pierre Michel Formosa, 68, and his companion, both from France, were driving on West Side Road on Monday, Aug. 17, when their car became stuck in mud near Queen of Sheba Mine Road, the park report said. They begin walking toward Badwater Road, about 4 miles across the salt flats.
After about 1¼ miles, Formosa was unable to continue, and his companion continued on alone. A passing driver helped the companion, and the incident was reported to the Furnace Creek visitor center around 2 p.m., the report said.

Park rangers, an Inyo County sheriff’s deputy and a California Highway Patrol helicopter team located Formosa. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The temperature in Death Valley reached 116 that day, the park report said. The Inyo County coroner will determine the cause of death.
