OAKLAND — A 5-year-old boy was hospitalized in critical condition from a fentanyl overdose, and now the kid’s mother and her boyfriend are facing child abuse charges, court records show.

The boy’s mother, a 35-year-old Oakland woman, and her boyfriend, a 28-year-old Oakland man, were both charged with felony child abuse. Police say that on June 21, the boy passed out at dinner at a home on Thornhill Drive in the city’s Montclair neighborhood, and was found to have cocaine and fentanyl in his system.
The boy was given Narcan at the hospital and intubated, authorities said.
In court filings, police say the mother’s boyfriend was “known to have had opioid problems in the past,” but that they’re still investigating exactly how the boy was able to ingest the drugs. Suspected cocaine and fentanyl was found in the home, according to court records.

The boy’s mother was released from jail without bail and her boyfriend was freed after posting $10,000 bail, court records show. They’ve both pleaded not guilty and are next due in court on Thursday.
