SAN JOSE — A man was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence and hit-and-run after a collision early Sunday in San Jose, police said.

The crash was reported just after 2:15 a.m. at the intersection of Bernal Road and Via Del Oro, San Jose police spokesperson Stacie Shih said in a news release.
An initial investigation revealed a man was driving a black 2017 Chevrolet pickup truck eastbound on Bernal Road when he hit a pedestrian at the intersection, Shih said.
The pedestrian, a man, died of his injuries at the scene, Shih said. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will release his identity after it is confirmed and his next of kin is notified.

Officers found and arrested the driver in San Jose, Shih said. He was booked into county jail.
The crash marked the city’s 12th pedestrian death and 26th overall traffic fatality of 2026. At this point last year, police had investigated 20 traffic fatalities on city streets.
The collision remains under investigation.
