What started more than 40 years ago as a symbolic porch vigil has been adopted by law enforcement agencies as a family-friendly annual initiative to strengthen community ties. Events in the Bay Area range from neighborhood potlucks to city-sponsored parties including barbecues, bounce houses, dunk tanks and giveaways.

Almost all cities in the region participate in the event, usually coordinated by police departments or sheriff’s offices.
