Pulled over by deputies investigating gunshots in a Southern California hillside neighborhood, a driver opened his trunk in front of them and shot the kidnapped person inside.

The deputies then fatally shot the gunman.
The shocking violence followed a report of gunshots around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday in a neighborhood in Chino Hills, about 10 miles northeast of Anaheim.
San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies responding to the call attempted a traffic stop on a speeding Nissan that had an Oregon license plate, sheriff’s spokesperson Gloria Orejel said. The driver led them on a pursuit for about a mile before pulling over.
The deputies then ordered the driver and his front-seat passenger to step out. Both complied — but the driver went around to the trunk, opened it and fired a shot into it, Orejel said.
At least one deputy fired at the driver, killing him. The passenger was arrested without further incident.
The man in the trunk was found to be dead. He apparently had been abducted from a home and was shot at least once before being put into the Nissan’s truck.
The sheriff’s department did not say whether the kidnappers are thought to have known their victim.
At the home from which the man was abducted, an outside circuit breaker box was hanging open and what was apparently blood was spattered on the driveway.
A neighbor, who asked that his name not be used, said he believed that the victim was a businessman, perhaps in his late 50s, who was married and had three children.
The neighbor said that his Ring security video cut out around 10:09 p.m. Wednesday— five minutes before the shooting was reported — and resumed at 10:24 p.m. It is unclear whether that outage was related to the crime.
