Toto, Christopher Cross and The Romantics — three top pop/rock acts who did big business on the charts back in the 1980s — have united for a major concert tour.

The trek includes two stops in Northern California — Aug. 15 at Shoreline Amphitheatre at Mountain View and Aug. 16 at Toyota Amphitheatre at Wheatland.
Toto, of course, is the headliner. And even though this diversely appealing group formed in Los Angeles way back in 1977, and then hit quadruple-platinum heights with the descriptively titled fourth album “Toto IV” released in 1982, Toto seems more popular today than ever.
The group, which features Steve Lukather (guitar, vocals), Joseph Williams (vocals), Warren Ham (horns, percussion, vocals), John Pierce (bass), Keith Carlock (drums), Dennis Atlas (keyboards, vocals) and Rai Thistlethwayte (keyboards, vocals), has seen a massive revival in interest in its music in recent years. In particular, its song — “Africa” (which was also famously covered by Weezer) — seems to have replaced Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” as the classic rock track you just can’t get away from.

Cross got off to a record-setting start to the ’80s, becoming the first artist to win all four of the general field Grammys — Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist — in 1981. That feat remained unmatched until Billie Eilish swept through those same categories in 2020.
The Romantics reached their pinnacle of commercial success with 1983’s “Talking in Your Sleep,” which went on to become the Detroit power-pop band’s only Top 10 pop single. Although, clearly, “What I Like About You” is a much better song.
