Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall’s health is again a concerning issue for the 49ers’ 2024 first-round pick.

Pearsall is having his problematic right knee examined after it swelled up only two practices into training camp.
A posterior cruciate ligament injury to the same knee sidelined him eight games last regular season plus the wild-card playoff upset at Philadelphia. He did play in the 49ers’ season-ending loss in Seattle in the divisional round. Pearsall’s NFL debut was delayed in 2024 after being shot by an attempted robber in San Francisco’s Union Square.
Pearsall is projected to start for the 49ers alongside newcomer Mike Evans, but second-round pick De’Zhaun Stribling is impressing in his first few months with the team. If Stribling seizes the starting flanker role, he will need to show proficiency in the playbook as it expands over the coming weeks, as offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak noted prior to Wednesday’s practice.

Veteran acquisition Christian Kirk sustained a calf strain on Sunday, the first practice of camp. Other receivers on the roster are Demarcus Robinson, Jacob Cowing and Jordan Watkins, whom Kubiak praised for taking a “big step” from an injury-plagued rookie season.
Meanwhile, running back Jordan James fractured a rib early in Monday’s practice and starting safety Malik Mustapha is dealing with a hamstring strain.
Injuries prompted the 49ers to shuffle their thin corps of defensive ends.
Quinton Bell and K.J. Henry were signed after Tuesday’s workout, while William Bradley-King and Andrew Farmer were waived/injured. Rookie Romello Height was back at practice after being carted off Monday with severe cramps.
