SAN FRANCISCO — A marine patrol unit recovered a body floating in the waters near the Golden Gate Bridge on Saturday morning, but there is no immediate indication that the person is one of the missing victims of a boating disaster near Alcatraz Island from earlier this month.

San Francisco police said in a statement that officers found a dead person around 10 a.m. off Point Diablo, west of the Marin County terminal point of the bridge.
The San Francisco Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has been tasked with confirming the identity of the person.
News of the body recovery piqued wide interest in light of the sinking of the Volare, a 49-foot three-story vessel that capsized July 14 near Alcatraz. A Sacramento-area party of 20 people, consisting mostly of family, was onboard the boat when disaster struck. Two boaters, including the brother of the operator, have been confirmed dead and two people remain unaccounted for.

The wreckage was located near where it sunk, about 600 feet off the shore of the island. In its statement Saturday, police said there was no immediate sign that the body they just recovered is connected to that tragedy.
“At this time, it has not been confirmed if the individual is related to the Volare,” police said.
