49ers’ GM Lynch addresses Bosa, Warner, Kittle, Aiyuk to start training camp

SANTA CLARA – 49ers defensive stars Nick Bosa and Fred Warner will begin the season with no injury designations after both missed most of last season.

Bosa changed up his routine while rehabbing from a torn ACL this summer. Rather than working out in his native Florida, the All-Pro stayed in the Bay Area and is expected to be at 100% as the season begins.

He and the rest of the 49ers will begin training camp without head coach Kyle Shanahan, who is recovering from injuries sustained in a recent car collision.

Meanwhile, 49ers general manager John Lynch said linebacker Fred Warner is also expected to be ready to go. Warner missed much of last season after fracturing his right ankle last October.

“He basically was a healthy player, just training this offseason,” Lynch said Saturday during a news conference at Levi’s Stadium. “He’s obviously given some care to the ankle, but in his mind, that’s behind him.”

Lynch also shared that a slew of high-profile veterans will begin the preseason on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

Tight end George Kittle tore his Achilles in January, is one of four players on the list. Kittle gave himself a lofty goal of returning to the field in Week 1.

“George’s rehab is coming tremendous,” Lynch said. “He’s doing really well, and that’s very exciting. He’s doing everything possible to be ready for Week 1.”

Defensive lineman Mykel Williams, last season’s first-round pick, tore his ACL in Week 6, and like Kittle, hopes to be back for the start of the regular season on Sept. 11, when the 49ers play the Rams in Australia.

“With Mykel, he’s making every effort to be ready for Week 1, and we’ll see if that’s a reality, and we’ll let the markers and the medical staff dictate that,” Lynch said.

His fellow draftee and defensive lineman Alfred Collins will likely need a little more time to recover from shoulder surgery.

“Alfred Collins will start on the PUP, but we anticipate him back in about the second window. Don’t hold us to that timeline, but that’s the plan right now,” said Lynch.

Though Lynch was happy to share his thoughts on those players, he chose his words carefully when asked about embattled receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

“Brandon is on a left-squad designation, as such, he’s not on our 90-man roster,” Lynch said, later adding, “At the forefront of our thoughts with any player is their well-being, and so I’ll just leave it at that. But we wish him well, we wish his family well.”
