After leaving Monday’s 4-3 loss early with a right elbow strain, rookie right-hander Trevor McDonald has landed on the 15-day injured list with the same ailment.

In a corresponding move, right-hander Tristan Beck was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento. Beck, 30, has appeared in eight games for the Giants this season, allowing eight runs over 10 2/3 innings (6.75 ERA) with five strikeouts to two walks.
McDonald went out to warm up for the bottom of the fifth inning but signaled to the dugout after feeling discomfort. Following a conversation with a trainer, McDonald exited the game after throwing just 67 pitches.
“Nothing that I wanted to chance right now,” McDonald told reporters in Kansas City. “So I thought it was best to come out when I did.”

McDonald, 25, has had an inconsistent rookie season, posting a 5.12 ERA over 14 starts, but he’s shown flashes of being a potential rotation mainstay. In his last start of the first half, for example, McDonald tossed seven innings of one-run ball against the Colorado Rockies, allowing just three hits and one walk.
Left-hander Carson Whisenhunt is the likeliest candidate to step into the rotation with McDonald headed to the injured list.
Whisenhunt, 25, has made two starts for the Giants this season, allowing four runs over 10 2/3 innings (3.38 ERA) with six strikeouts. The rookie has fared well in Triple-A given the River Cats play in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, owning a 4.15 ERA and 3.93 FIP over 17 games (16 starts). In his last outing on Sunday, Whisenhunt pitched five scoreless innings with eight strikeouts to one walk.
