Suspect dead in Vallejo police shooting after alleged carjacking

A suspect was shot and killed by Vallejo police after a Monday afternoon carjacking an hour earlier led to a vehicle stoppage in North Vallejo.

Police initially responded to an armed robbery at 12:19 p.m. at the 400 block of Ryder Street. Police later stopped a suspect at the corner of Mahogany Drive and Broadway. According to Public Information Officer Rashad Hollis, the suspect then fired his weapon at police, who returned fire and shot the suspect.

According to a Vallejo Police Department news release put out at approximately 1 a.m. Tuesday morning, the identity of the suspect who died in the shooting is Rommel Delfin Querol, a 44-year-old male resident of Vallejo.

Hollis would not say if police officers or the suspect had left their vehicles at the time of the shooting.

No officers were injured in the shooting. Hollis said at least one officer has been put on paid administrative leave.

According to the VPD news release, the Solano County Major Crimes Task Force responded to the scene and has assumed responsibility for the criminal investigation. The City of Vallejo has also retained an independent investigator to initiate an administrative investigation into this incident, while a Vallejo PD Critical Incident Review Board will be convened to evaluate this incident and conduct a review of the department’s tactics, training, supervision, equipment, and after-action response.

Hollis said that with the case now in the hands of the Solano County District Attorneys Office, so he didn’t know how long until bodycam footage could be seen. However, in the Tuesday morning news release, the Vallejo Police Department said it will be convening a town hall meeting in the next 7 to 14 days, where the department said more information regarding this incident will be provided.

Officials remained at the scene Monday night, with Hollis saying that he expected to have a presence there throughout the night due to the open investigation.
