CAPITOLA — Law enforcement placed the Capitola Mall under a lockdown Monday after a deadly altercation occurred near the premises.

Capitola Police Chief Sarah Ryan told the Sentinel that one person was declared dead and a man was taken into custody. Ryan noted that the “nexus” between the suspect and victim was not yet known.
According to a Capitola Police Department social media post, a “physical altercation” occurred at approximately 12:47 p.m. Monday near the food court parking lot close to Clares Street. As of Monday afternoon, there was no ongoing threat to public safety, according to the release.

The agency asked anyone who witnessed the incident to contact its offices at 831-475-4242. Identifying details about the victim were not available as of Monday.
