Twenty-five theaters in the United States are showing Christopher Nolan’s epic “The Odyssey” in the IMAX 70mm format, and two of them are in the Bay Area.

At Regal Hacienda Crossings in Dublin and AMC Metreon 16 in San Francisco, viewers can see the new movie in both the highest definition and on the largest screen available.
On the morning of opening day — Friday, July 17 — both theaters had sold out their IMAX 70mm screenings for the day. A few seats were available for the 3 a.m. Saturday showings, for $32 at Dublin and $28 at the Metreon, plus service fee.
The Metreon is next to Yerba Buena Gardens in the South of Market neighborhood, and Hacienda Crossings is a shopping center off Interstate 580.

“The Odyssey” is the first non-documentary to be shot using the ultra-high-resolution IMAX cameras for the whole movie, rather than just for certain scenes. Other premium formats in which it will be screened have half the equation: either IMAX or 70mm, but not both.
The star-studded movie, almost three hours long, has gotten strong advance notices, including from our reviewer, who calls it a “cinematic marvel.”
