UNION CITY — A pedestrian died after being struck by a motorist late Monday in Union City, police said.

The incident happened just before midnight near the intersection of Whipple Road and Central Avenue, according to the Union City Police Department.
Police said the pedestrian received medical aid at the scene and was taken to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries. He was not publicly identified Tuesday.
The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, police said, adding that the driver did not appear to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“The Union City Police Department understands that this is a tragic incident for everyone involved and would like to express our condolences to the families impacted by this incident,” police said in a statement.
Whipple Road was closed between Central Avenue and Hayman Street from about 12:25 a.m. to 2:35 a.m. while officers conducted their investigation.
