SAN MATEO – A driver was killed in a fiery crash Tuesday evening in San Mateo, police said.

The solo-vehicle collision happened around 7:15 p.m. near the Alameda de las Pulgas and Highway 92 interchange, according to the San Mateo Police Department.
Police said the vehicle traveled through the interchange, hit a light pole and burst into flames.
The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was later pronounced dead. The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office will release the person’s identity after it is confirmed and their next of kin is notified.

An investigation is underway into the collision, police said, adding that more information will be released as it becomes available.
Noting the presence of heavy, toxic smoke around the crash site, police asked the public to avoid the area of Alameda de las Pulgas between Highway 92 and 20th Avenue.
