SAN JOSE — City officials have approved a mixed-use development in a lively district of San Jose, a project that’s poised to blend residences with commercial activities such as a performance studio.

The project would be built at 653 North 7th St. in the city’s Japantown neighborhood, documents on file at San Jose City Hall show. City staffers approved the project July 8.
Along with the housing, the project is slated to produce a Taiko performance building, an office, a workshop and a gallery space, the city plans show. Taiko San Jose is a nonprofit Japanese taiko drumming arts company.
The mixed-use housing and commercial project is being developed by Orange County-based Shea Properties, one of California’s top residential builders.
Orange County-based Shea has also teamed with real estate firm Ivanhoe Cambridge to develop two apartment complexes on the same block as, and adjacent to, the 0.7-acre site where the mixed-use housing and commercial project would be built.
The 653 North 7th development would include 65 residential units and about 14,100 square feet of commercial space that would include the Taiko performance building.

The six-story building would be adjacent to a proposed public park, according to Shea Homes.
“The project will benefit from and contribute to an activated urban edge, with green spaces and seating areas that are accessible to the public and provide outdoor respite for residents,” the development proposal notes.
The developers also hope that the mix of uses, such as the Taiko performance center, will help increase the vibrancy of the neighborhood.
“The project aims to create a harmonious blend of housing, arts and public space, reinforcing the site as a key destination for both living and cultural expression,” the development plans state.
