PINOLE — The U.S. Coast Guard late Wednesday suspended its search for a man who did not return after leaving for a fishing trip Tuesday.

Tito Montances, 70, left to launch his canoe into San Pablo Bay about 1 p.m. on Saturday but never returned home. The canoe was green and seated one. Authorities said they found his truck at the Bay Front Park in Pinole.
The East Bay Regional Park police launched drones in the initial search, as did Hercules police. Hercules police contacted the Coast Guard about 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, and multiple crews were sent to search for Montances.
According to the Coast Guard, the crews searched more than 280 square miles during 38 hours.

“The decision to suspend a search is never an easy one,” Chief Warrant Officer and search-and-rescue-coordinator Michael Zapawa said in a statement. “We appreciate the work of our partners throughout the search efforts, and our hearts are with Mr. Montances’ loved ones.”
Authorities said Montances is 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighs 180 pounds. He was wearing a navy blue jacket, light-colored shorts and black shoes when he left home.
Authorities said that anyone with information on Montances should contact the Coast Guard at 415-399-3451.
