OAKLAND — A driver whose passenger was killed in an Oakland freeway collision in January has been charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, authorities said.

Alazjah Cannon, 32, of Pleasant Hill, was charged Monday in the January 3 death of TreVaughn Winston Brown, 34, who the coroner’s bureau said was a resident of West Sacramento.
A letter notifying Cannon of the charge being filed has been mailed to her home by prosecutors. The letter says she is required to appear in court on July 27.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Cannon was driving a vehicle that was involved in a collision with another vehicle on westbound Interstate 580 east of Lakeshore Avenue on the night of Jan. 3.
She was injured and Brown, her passenger, was killed, the CHP said. Two occupants of the other vehicle were also injured.
According to court records, CHP officers allegedly found marijuana in her vehicle and believed that she was “driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of a controlled substance,” which resulted in Brown’s death.
It was not clear what the relationship was between Cannon and Brown.
Cannon was placed under arrest at the hospital and later made bail. The bail amount was not immediately available.
