OAKLAND — Police here raided a suspected illegal card room last month, seizing cash, drugs, and evidence that people were gambling inside the converted residence, according to court records.

Authorities say the suspected gambling den and card house’s cover was blown after a man and a woman got into a heated argument and the woman fired a shot inside the living room. No one was struck by gunfire but nearby residents reported the shooting and police say they found bullet strike marks inside and outside the business.
Officers responding to the shooting saw illegal slot machines and card tables in plain view, and the alleged operator readily admitted the house was used for gambling. Police say they seized body armor, methamphetamine, cards, gambling ledgers, cash, and more than 22 pounds of suspected opioid pills from the home.

The residence was located on the 1100 block of East 23rd Street, authorities said. It is only the latest suspected gambling den to raided in Oakland, where the illicit gambling industry appears to be thriving. Last year, police documented dozens of shootings between rival groups that ran illegal casinos all over town, resulting in one suspected casino boss being arrested at a gambling shack and serving a short jail sentence.
