Six people who attempted to climb the cliffs at Davenport Beach on the night of Fourth of July had to be rescued after their rope broke.

The emergency call came just before midnight on Saturday, reported the San Mateo-Santa Cruz unit of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
When the rope broke, three people fell 30 to 40 feet to the beach, and the other three were stuck halfway up the cliff.

Emergency responders used a rope rescue system to bring the three injured people up from the beach. They were taken to the hospital, one with critical injuries and the others with moderate injuries.
The three stuck on the cliff were then pulled up using ropes and harnesses.
In addition to CalFire, personnel from state parks, Santa Cruz’s fire department, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office and an ambulance company responded to the call, the report said. Helicopter airlift was not possible because of heavy fog.
