MARTINEZ — An inmate at the Martinez Detention Facility died Thursday, nearly 24 hours after beeing booked into the facility.

In a statement, the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office said a deputy discovered 40-year-old Patrick Smith in a room about 9:05 a.m. He was not responsive. He had been booked into the facility about 10 a.m. on Wednesday on suspicion of violating narcotics laws, the sheriff’s office said.
Smith’s jail profile no longer was listed on Contra Costa County’s online jail inmate list Friday.
The sheriff’s office said they dispatched medical staff at the facility to provide life-saving care for Smith until medical personnel arrived. Paramedics declared him dead.
The Contra Costa County District Attorney, per protocol, is investigating the death, because it occurred while someone was in custody. The sheriff’s office also is investigating.
