SAN JOSE — Authorities have confirmed that a man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after he shot and seriously injured a woman in a Kaiser Permanente parking lot in South San Jose earlier this week, a startling bout of violence that paralyzed the medical complex.

San Jose police officers were called at 10:14 a.m. Monday to an outdoor lot on Cottle Road just north of Beswick Drive for a report of gunfire. They arrived to find a man and woman lying near one another, each with gunshot injuries.
Both people were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries; the man later died. He has been identified by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office as a 60-year-old Watsonville resident. This news organization is not publishing his name because he died by suicide, but is reporting on the shooting because of the public manner in which it occurred.
The injured woman was hospitalized in critical condition but is expected to survive, police said.

In the wake of the shooting, police said the man was considered the suspect and that no other people were involved, but did not immediately disclose how he died. The coroner’s office has since confirmed that he died by suicide.
Police also said that the man and woman knew each other, but have not specified their relationship, nor any possible link to the Kaiser complex.
