OAKLAND — A man whose body was found in a grave at a West Oakland homeless camp this week died from severe head trauma and his death is being investigated as a homicide, authorities said Friday.

His identity still has not been confirmed, authorities said. Until he is positively identified, police are not able to say where he lived.
His partially decomposed remains were found about 2 p.m. Tuesday in a grave at a homeless camp in the 500 block of 34th Street, an area below where Highway 24 and Interstate 580 meet.
An autopsy determined he died from severe head trauma, but police did not say how they believe it was inflicted.

Police believe he had been in the grave at least two months but don’t know if he was killed at the camp or brought there from another location and buried.
A motive has not been determined and no arrests have been made.
The killing is the 23rd homicide investigated by Oakland police this year. Last year at this time police had investigated 36 homicides in the city.
