SAN CARLOS – A 45-year-old Millbrae man is in custody following an attempted bank robbery Tuesday in San Carlos, authorities said.

The incident unfolded around 12:30 p.m. at a bank in the 700 block of El Camino Real, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies arrived to find the man still at the teller counter.
The man appeared agitated, authorities said, but he was taken into custody without incident.
An investigation revealed the man told a teller he had a gun and demanded $5,000, according to the sheriff’s office.

The man was arrested on suspicion of attempted bank robbery and booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility in Redwood City. No firearm was found, authorities said.
Jail records showed he is being held on $50,000 bail.
The case will be forwarded to the FBI for consideration of federal charges, according to the sheriff’s office.
