Prince’s estate has announced the first major release in three years from the Purple One’s storied Vault. The 10-track album “Timeless” is due out Aug. 28 on CD, vinyl and through streaming services.

It features previously released songs that trace “Prince’s remarkable artistic evolution across nearly four decades, from his earliest studio recordings as a teenage prodigy in Minneapolis to one of his final recorded performances,” according to a news release.
The estate issued the first song from the collection, “With This Tear,” in April on the 10th anniversary of Prince’s death. He originally wrote it in 1991 for Celine Dion after hearing her Disney song “Beauty and the Beast” on the radio. Thursday, the estate released “Stone,” a 1995 number Prince recorded during sessions for “Emancipation.”
Other tracks on the album include a 1978 home recording of “I Am You,” an early version of “Tick, Tick, Bang” which he rerecorded for “Graffiti Bridge” and a live version of “How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore” from 2016.
Prince was notorious for recording, and then shelving, entire albums — as well as his live performances — and keeping them in storage. In the early years after his death, his estate regularly issued previously unheard music. The most recent major release was 2023’s super deluxe edition of “Diamonds and Pearls,” which included his 1991 album in full along with several dozen other songs from the era and two live concerts.

The annual Prince Celebration event kicked off Wednesday at Paisley Park in Chanhassen. It’s tied into his birthday, which is Sunday.
Friday night, members of his bands the Revolution and New Power Generation will perform at the Armory in downtown Minneapolis with guests Morris Day, Miguel, Tevin Campbell, Bilal, Kat Graham and others. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.
A free Prince block party and community singalong will take place from 2 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Prince Mural on North Ninth Street in downtown Minneapolis. A choir of more than 100 vocalists led by Sanford Moore will lead a singalong featuring some of Prince’s most-loved songs.
