SAN JOSE — A 41-year-old Santa Clara County sheriff’s deputy has been arrested on suspicion of possessing child sexual abuse material, police said.

Roy Chen was taken into custody Saturday in Cupertino and booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail in San Jose, San Jose police spokesperson Stacie Shih said in a news release.
Earlier that day, San Jose police officers were flagged down by a person who reported finding child sexual abuse material at Chen’s home in San Jose, Shih said.
An investigation revealed Chen is employed with the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy, Shih said. Detectives obtained a search warrant for Chen’s residence.
No other details about the case were released.
The sheriff’s office acknowledged Chen’s arrest in a statement Monday, noting that “the deputy has been placed on administrative leave while the matter is reviewed.”

The San Jose Police Department is leading the criminal investigation, while the sheriff’s office conducts a separate administrative probe, according to the sheriff’s office.
“These allegations are extremely serious,” the sheriff’s office said in the statement. “At the same time, we must respect the integrity of both the criminal and administrative processes and avoid drawing conclusions before the facts are fully established.
“The sheriff’s office remains committed to accountability and public trust, and we will take appropriate employment action once those processes are complete.”
