The incident happened on Oct. 2 just before 9 p.m. in the 7300 block of Church Street, near West Seventh Street, according to the Gilroy Police Department. Officers arrived to find a 45-year-old man suffering from a “serious stab wound” to his stomach.
The victim was taken to a hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery, police said.
After interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence, detectives identified the suspect as Jose Antonio Mateo Ruiz. Police said the investigation also revealed the two men were acquaintances and had gotten into an argument after spending time together that day.
Using automated license plate reader technology, detectives tracked down Mateo Ruiz’s vehicle in Santa Cruz County, police said. Mateo Ruiz, however, was not located.
