RICHMOND — A man who’d won his appeal after being convicted of murdering his cousin later agreed to a 17-year, eight-month prison term in a plea deal with Contra Costa prosecutors, court records show.

Thadeus Colley, 50, pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter in exchange for the prison term, and prosecutors dropped a murder charge against him. Colley was convicted in 2019 of murder in the shooting death of 42-year-old Jamaa Anderson.
He had been sentenced to life in prison until the conviction was reversed in 2021. An appellate court ruled a judge should have instructed the jury on the possibility that the killing happened in self-defense, given that Anderson and Colley had fought over an iPad when Anderson was shot and killed in Richmond.

Anderson was shot around 1:40 a.m. Nov. 2, 2018, on the 3100 block of Deseret Drive in Richmond. He was taken to a hospital and died later that day. Colley is currently being housed at the Corcoran Substance Treatment Abuse Facility, records show.

The plea deal was finalized last January but hasn’t been previously reported.
