Bicyclist remains hospitalized following hit-and-run in Livermore

LIVERMORE — A 64-year-old man remains hospitalized following a hit-and-run last month in Livermore.

The incident happened shortly before 10 p.m. on Aug. 15 on Isabel Avenue, just south of the Stanley Boulevard connector, according to the Livermore Police Department.

The man, identified by his family only as Patrick, was riding home from work when he was hit by a driver, his attorney, Paul Matiasic, said in a statement Friday evening.

“The carelessness and recklessness of the driver in striking Patrick was compounded by his depravity in leaving him for dead in the roadway,” Matiasic said.

“Cyclists like Patrick deserve to be protected from both those who disobey our traffic laws and from the lack of humanity fleeing the scene after causing such destruction,” he added. “We look forward to making sure that all those responsible for this tragedy are held to account by way of our criminal and civil justice system.”

The bicyclist was rushed to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries and placed in a medically induced coma, his family and loved ones said in a statement.

“He remains in critical care at a local hospital with over 17 fractures and has already endured an unimaginably difficult fight,” the family said. “He also sustained a traumatic brain injury, making his recovery even more complicated and uncertain.”

“While he has a long and arduous road ahead,” the family said, “we will continue to be by his side providing him with our love and support in the hopes of one day re-experiencing his radiant kindness.”

Investigators are searching for witnesses and have asked drivers to check their dash cameras or other recording systems for footage from the area around the time of the incident.

No arrests have been announced.
