Overcrowded roads and long lines of traffic are expected near San Francisco and the Peninsula for much of the upcoming holiday weekend because of a highway closure in one direction.

Caltrans is shutting down all northbound lanes of U.S. 101 between the Cesar Chavez and 17th Street exits — also known as Hospital Curve — to complete major pavement repair work. That stretch of the Bayshore Freeway will be closed beginning at 11 p.m. Friday and is scheduled to reopen Monday at 6 a.m.
This weekend marks Labor Day, the unoffical end of summer.
The repair work is part of a two-weekend undertaking that’s part of the Hospital Curve Rehabilitation project that began in 2025. Work crews will be on site doing repairs 24 hours a day during the closure.
The northbound lanes on that stretch of the highway also will be closed from Sept. 18-21.
Caltrans advised motorists to avoid the area if possible. Those in the area can use northbound Interstate 280 for travel toward downtown San Francisco or the Bay Bridge, though traffic delays will be expected.

Downtown drivers can take I-280 through I-380 near San Bruno and onto southbound U.S. 101. Drivers coming from the San Francisco International Airport can take I-380 into I-280 and can re-enter U.S. 101 on the northbound side near the Bernal Heights neighborhood.
Detour signs also will be out to help drivers. Motorists on U.S. 101 will be detoured from the Cesar Chavez Street/Potrero Avenue exit to 9th Street or Bryant Street and redirected to I-280. Another detour on U.S. 101 will take drivers on northbound I-280 to the Bay Bridge and drivers on southbound I-280 to 19th Avenue or Monterey Boulevard exit. The detour then will take motorists to San Jose Avenue and then to Guerrero Street.
